How to Take a Screenshot on iPad Pro

How to Take a Screenshot on iPad Pro without Home Button
Many iPad users have to resort to using a virtual home button as the physical button gets damaged over time.
You also might not be able to use the home button if you have Touch ID enabled. Your home button will register your fingerprint and not your screenshot attempt.
If this is the case for you, follow these steps:
- Open your display to the screen you want to capture
- Hold the iPad Pro firmly or rest it on something
- At the same time, press and hold the Top Button and the Volume Up button
- Hold them for about 2 seconds
- The screenshot will be captured and shown as a pop-up in the bottom left of your screen
- Either open the pop-up or swipe it away
You can do this on all Apple tablets that don’t have a working home button.
How to Take a Screenshot on iPad Mini 4

- Either open the pop-up by pressing on it, or swipe it away
How to Take a Screenshot on iPhone
There are 2 main ways to take a screenshot on an iPhone.
The first method is for iPhones that are using Face ID:
- Go to the screen you want to capture
- Find the Side Button on the right-hand side of your phone (with the screen facing you)
- Find the Volume Up Button on the left-hand side of your phone
- At the same time, press the Side Button and the Volume Up Button
- Unlike iPad screenshot methods, you don’t need to hold them down – just press and release
- The screenshot will be taken and displayed as a temporary pop-up in the bottom left corner of your screen
The second method is for iPhones with Touch ID. You’ll follow the same steps as above, but the buttons you press will be different. Here is what you need to press:
- At the same time, briefly press the Side Button and the Home Button
- There’s no need to hold them down like you need to do with iPads
- The screenshot will be taken and will show as a pop-up for a few moments (bottom left-hand corner of your screen)

iPad Pro Screenshot Keyboard Shortcut
Using a keyboard gives you some of the versatility you’d get on a laptop. The issue you’ll face when trying to take screenshots is that some of the buttons are hard to reach and hold down in the required combinations.
With your keyboard attached and connected to your iPad Pro (other models will have the same process), here are the keyboard shortcuts for taking a screenshot:
- Command-Shift-3: You’ll need to press these 3 keys at the same time. The result will be a screenshot that will show as a pop-up for a few brief moments. You can either open the pop-up or swipe it away.
- Command-Shift-4: This key combination will take a screenshot and immediately open Markup and allow you to edit the screenshot.
How to Find and Edit Your Screenshots
You’ll need to go back to your home screen and open Photos.
You’ll be able to find your screenshots using Moments. I find this way to take quite a while, especially if you have loads of photos and screenshots.
An easier way is to navigate to the Albums section in Photos. Find the Screenshots folder and open it to view all your screenshots.
To edit your screenshot, open it and click on the Edit option. This will open Markup and let you make changes to your screenshot.
What to do When Screenshots Aren’t Working?
This can be quite complex and can be the result of hardware or software faults. Try the following fixes to see if anything works for you:
- Try different screenshot methods (home button + side button; or side button + volume up button)
- Make sure your physical home button is working
- Perform a forced restart by holding down the power button of your iPhone or iPad for around 10 seconds. You should feel a short vibration letting you know the device is doing a forced restart.
Final Thoughts
That’s it for our guide. By now you should know how to take a screenshot on iPad Air 2 and other Apple tablets and phones. All that’s left is to see what works best for you and your device!
